What’s important for Women in Australia when it comes to climate change?

1MW in the world – IWECI Summit by Bronte Hogarth

The International Women’s Earth and Climate Summit is being held in New York this September 20-23, which Nat (1MW CEO and Founder) will be attending along with 100 other woman delegates selected from all the world.

The three-day summit, focused on furthering a women’s climate action agenda, will bring together these women to facilitate discussions and build networks to create new strategies or improve existing ones for climate action and sustainability solutions.

Australia has made an international commitment to reduce its greenhouse gas emissions by 5-25% from 2000 levels by 2020.

Australia has been noted as a major country to watch when it comes to curbing climate change, and in New York Nat will be representing both 1 Million Women and the women of Australia.

Untitled 2 copyThe women of Australia can play a big role in cutting pollution to help reach these targets. Holding the purse-strings for example, it’s estimated Australian women are responsible for making 70-90% of domestic financial decisions. That’s massive consumer power, to support brands taking sustainable actions, products using less energy, choosing recycled goods over new ones, buying seasonal produce and the list goes on.

It’s easy to forget that everything expends some form of energy to create which is why consumer power is such a massive area when it comes to climate action, as we have the power NOT to support those who aren’t looking to a sustainable future.

Key areas we have already found the women of Australia to be engaged in when it comes to cutting waste and pollution through simple actions is food, shopping, energy, transportfashion, investments, and building. Our 1MW project SAVE, found it possible to SAVE $1000 a year by taking small everyday actions in these focus areas, cutting pollution, reducing waste and saving energy and money at the same time.

Food, shopping, energy, transport, fashion, investments, and building are key areas the women of Australia are engaged in when it comes to cutting waste and pollution through simple actions.

These areas will be included in our own 1MW agenda for the summit in New York, to make sure they are part of the international discussion and to gain new information and solutions.

1 Million Women is all about making simple and practical changes to lead to long term behaviour change, and our voice is that of our members, and what we have learned through you in our projects. We know every woman is different, and each of us will play a very different role in combating climate change.

As Sam Mostyn, 1MW Ambassador says…”Nothing creates community change faster than a group of enthusiastic, determined women!!”
