1. Describe yourself in 4 words?
Conservation artist with soul.
2. What are you doing at the present?
I am conservation artist. I use my art to focus on environmental issues and endangered species because it’s an indication of what is happening to the whole planet. Species are dying out at an increasing rate, even things as common as frogs are just disappearing – whole ranges of them. The reason for this is the destruction of their environment. You see the forest in South East Asia being burnt down, you see the ice melting where the polar bears are living.
I had an exhibition in New York once where I showed conservation art and the critic from the paper said something that will always stick with me, “Always make them beautiful.” If you want to save them, make them look beautiful because then people will want to do something. So that’s what I’m doing. I don’t want to frighten people away, I want to inspire action.
3. What inspires you?
Nature inspires me. When I’m in it, I feel the need to do my part to save all these amazing creatures and places. These creatures are absolutely essential to us, but they don’t have enough people standing up for them.
4. Is there an experience or time in your life that has truly changed the way you live? (i.e. – more conscious about living sustainably)
When I was a teenager I lived on a property in the country with my stepfather, who was a great naturalist. In those days I used to question, “why would I want to save petrol,” and “who cares about saving for the environment?” But then one day my stepfather took me right up into the mountains behind the house and said lets just sit here for awhile. We sat by a big deep mountain pool in the rock and birds came down to drink and bathe in that pool that I had never seen before. This experience taught me to see the beauty of nature and why we need to fight for it.
